As part of this Wilkes University Continuing Education Seminar, Paul T. Rushton and Lee S. Piatt of Rosenn Jenkins & Greenwald (RJG) will provide recommendations for business owners for planning in advance for certain events that may affect their business.
  • Summarize the various issues confronting business owners as they address the succession of their business to the next generation of family members and/or managers.
  • Outline the issues that arise when a business owner or an heir is getting married
  • Address how certain other life events should be addressed in a business, including the manner in which the divorce of a business owner should be treated in a “buy-sell” agreement and how a business can prepare for a potential rift between the owners of a family-owned business.
  • Highlight several steps that can be taken in advance of the sale of a business to ease the tax burdens arising therefrom, as well as some estate planning that can be implemented after the sale to achieve tax savings.
  • Explain how many business owners are planning for and addressing the question of “what’s next” after they complete the sale of their business.
